From Soil to a Child's Bowl: A Kenya–Brazil Food Conversation
In this personal reflection, Sherika Trott Bailey describes her family’s AgriGames Foodway, a community food-growing project in Prado, Bahia, Brazil, and draws connections with the Ndaloh Heritage Organization in Kenya. She reflects on how growing food, restoring soil and sharing harvests can support children and families. The article brings together experiences from two communities to encourage learning across borders and to imagine how schools and public spaces might contribute to more accessible, locally grown food.

The study assessed food access, household food production, market access, and food consumption among rural households in Western Kenya. It used a cross-sectional survey with 64 smallholder farming households in Gem and Rarieda, Siaya County. Many respondents reported food insecurity: 53.6% often had no food, and some reported eating smaller meals or having limited food variety. Farming was a major food source, and vegetables and grains were eaten frequently. The authors conclude that improving food access and dietary diversity, including the variety of grains available, could support better nutrition.

This study explores whether local foods can make sorghum porridge more nutritious and appealing. Researchers tested recipes combining sorghum with ingredients such as orange-fleshed sweet potato, amaranth, pumpkin seeds, mango and guava. In a tasting with 120 participants, the selected fortified porridges were well accepted and had substantially higher iron content than the sorghum-only comparison. The paper is a preprint that has not been peer reviewed.
